Welsh Day of Action

On Thursday March 4th, activists removed genetically modified products from
the
shelves at a Sainsbury's store in Cardiff, to inform the public of the risks
that GM foods pose to human health the environment and the developing world.
The Cardiff decontamination formed part of the first national day of action
against GM food in Wales, organised in conjunction with the Green Party.
Stores
in Aberystwyth, Bangor and Swansea were targeted with a variety of protests.
----------------------
Safeway Day of Action

Over 150 people staged a protest at Safeway's store in Totnes, Devon, against
the company's attitude to GE food on 6th March. The manager was presented with
the results of a survey conducted the previous day outside the store which
showed that over 70% of customers wanted Safeway to go GE-free and over 90%
wanted GE products to be segregated within the store.  A large banner was hung
over the entrance which read "GMO-FREE - THE ONLY SAFE WAY".
Similar Safeway actions took place at stores in Plymouth, Bodmin, Newcastle
,Worcester, Warminster and several other venues nationwide
In the past two weeks Safeway's current head of Corporate Affairs, Tony
Coombes, has announced plans to join Monsanto as head of Corporate affairs.
This may explain his recent comment at an Organic Food Industry conference
where he stated that organic producers should be prepared and would reap the
benefit of "accepting GMO's into the production of organic food"!!!
Other Safeways actions have also taken place recently -in Taunton, where
reports have spoken of a highly agitated frankenstein figure concerned about
shoppers stealing his food!
-------------------------------
DIRECT ACTION SUCCESS AS TWO FARMS PULL OUT OF GM TRIALS

As a direct result of England's first "crop squat" in May 1998 there are to be
no more GM trials on the Colman estate in Norfolk. Until now this estate has
almost topped the league table for deliberate releases of Genetically Modified
Organisms (GMOs) on private land in the UK. Crown Point Farms in Kirby Bedon
has ended its relationship with Novartis Seeds and Monsanto because of the
controversy about GM trials, their high profile media coverage and a direct
action campaign by activists.
A spokesperson for the estate commented "There is a huge public debate over GM
crops and a lot of public disquiet. Crown Point Farms does not wish to be in
the middle of all this".
Meanwhile in Northumbria the local press reported at the end of February
that a
farmer has pulled out of field trials due to activists destroying last years
crop. Interestingly the farmer also comments "from a commercial point of view
the only people who are going to benefit are the large companies and not the
farmers themselves" . Interviewed recently Novartis pokesperson, Richard
Powell, said it was becoming more difficult to rent land for GM trials because
of the controversy surrounding them. Perhaps this is the year when it
should be
made impossible….
----------------------------
The Early Bird Catches the Seed…Anti GM action in Hull.

On Friday 19th February a group of 35 activists for 4 hours occupied part of a
massive seed oil processing plant in central Hull, owned by Cargill.( an
international marketer, processor and distributor of agricultural and food
products, who last year signed a partnership with Monsanto to "create and
market new products enhanced through biotechnology")
After a bleary briefing people arrived unhindered on the site at 9am and
spontaneously split into four groups, occupying a silo and a tower, blockading
a lorry and staging a gate protest. A few protestors and legal observers
roamed
between communicating until the gate was locked by police, preventing further
movement of lorries etc. The protest continued until 1pm and the activists
left
without arrests being made.
---------------------------
Stroud takes to the streets

Members of the Stroud Campaign for Safe food took to the streets on 6th March
in protest at GM foods. Over 500 local residents took part in a 2hour march
through the town that took in all the local Supermarkets en route. A rally was
also held  at which David Drew, the local MP and the Mayor for the area spoke.
Amazingly the whole thing was brought together within the space of 2 weeks!
---------------------------
Manchester Shoppers Abduct Marks and Spencer's Mutant Food
Campaigners from Manchester Against Genetic Engineering (MAGE) removed GM food
from the shelves of M&S on 11th February in growing protests at the companies
appalling stance on GM food. Healthy organic alternatives were placed on the
shelves and the GM products were delivered to Manchester City council - to be
disposed of as "biohazardous waste". Two people were ejected from the store -
no one was arrested. Other customers were disgusted to learn that mutant food
was on sale at the home of so called "St Michael quality foods". MAGE are on

More Mutant Food Confiscated

Protestors in London removed 96 GM items from the Sainsbury's superstore in
Camden on 20th February, displaying them in a GM "Biohazard dump" outside the
main entrance. 14 people took part and were joined by hundreds of shoppers and
passers by who stopped to examine the confiscated GM items. Placards and
leaflets accused the New Labour Government of being "little more than a
mouthpiece for Monsanto, Unilever, Sainsbury's and other big business
interests". Anti GM speeches via megaphone were applauded by the crowd.
After 40 minutes the protest was broken up by police, who seized the megaphone
and placards and allowed the store to retrieve confiscated items. 2 people
were
arrested and held for several hours prior to being released on bail, while
Sainsbury's decide whether to press charges. The two arrestees have stated
they
are happy to challenge Sainsbury's in court.

“ These people work for nothing, how can you stop that ?” -
Monsanto Executive at a training conference.

No More Mixing and Splicing: M&S go GE free!
But what about Tesco, Sainsburys etc?

Following from the media storm over GE food, increased customer pressure and a
sustained campaign of action against them, M&S have caved in, agreeing on the
16th March to remove all GE material from their foods. This decision means
that
M&S will become the first retailer in the UK to be completely GE free, as they
do not deal with any other companies brands.
Worth noting is that Carlos Jolly, a Monsanto spokesperson, at a recent
conference in Oxford, talked about M&S displaying "good practice" in their
attitude to his companies GE products. Now we can actually agree with him!
The M&S statement follows on from announcements by Asda and most recently
Waitrose, of their intentions to completley remove GE ingredients from all own
brand products.
The positions adopted by Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Safeway, Somerfield and the Co-op
are now looking increasingly untenable. Retail analysts have predicted that
these stores will  be forced to follow the  GE free route, “if Marks and
Spencer management have formed this view, it is probable that others will
follow.” To ensure that this does happen it is more essential than ever to
keep
up the pressure on them.
In their statement M&S confirmed that they were bowing to the concerns of
their
customers. (65% in a poll at the end of 1998 did not want them to sell GE
food)
Worryingly though, the spokesperson added “We believe there is a role for
GM” -
showing that even now they have still not  accepted the very real risks that
this technology brings, and are leaving the door open to resume their genetic
experiment.
For ideas on ways to keep up the pressure on retailers see "So you wanna stop
the genetix experiment"  available from GEN. Concern on a retailers position
can also be registered via their “helplines” - where the number of calls on
any
issue are logged!
----------------------------------
As far as GEN is aware the statement by M&S only refers to GM food
products. They are also a major clothing retailer. Nearly 50% of the US cotton
crop last year was GE, which is then exported for use world wide. So GEN has a
question for M&S, - ARE YOU REALLY GE FREE,OR IS MONSANTO STILL LURKING IN
YOUR
PANTS?
-------------------------------
A Three year fudge on Commercial growing?
Newspaper reports on the 14th March indicated that the government may be about
to agree a 3 year voluntary moratorium on commercial growing in the UK with
biotech companies. Hundreds of unwanted field trials will continue with a view
to commercialisation in 3 years time.
-----------------------------
Council of Europe calls for xenotransplantation moratorium as animal to human
organ transplants move closer in the UK

On 29th January the Council of Europe called for a worldwide moratorium on
xenotransplantation until this new technology - which uses animal parts for
human transplants - is evaluated and guidelines established and agreed.
In the UK  biotechnology company Genzyme  have applied to the Department of
Health to transplant nerve cells from foetal pigs in to the brains of patients
with Parkinson's disease - a first step towards animal to human organ
transplants. A Cambridge-based subsidiary of drugs giant Novartis leads
xenotransplantation research in the UK. It announced last summer that it was
just months away from applying for a licence to use a pig's liver to treat a
human. It also hopes to graft pigs' kidneys into humans in the near future.
Already in the US, operations have taken place to attach pig organs, such as a
liver, outside the human body via a "bridge" .
Xenotransplantation raises massive ethical and moral questions. As a recent
report "animal organs in humans" notes "Xenotransplantation patients will be
living embodiments of the mythical concept of chimerism, a hybrid of different
species" There are potentially horrendous health consequences including the
transfer of known and unknown animal viruses to humans and the emergence of
totally new infections. BUAV and CIWF produced the report - Call 0171 700 4888

Complaints on Monsanto's Ads Upheld

The Advertising Standards Authority is to condemn Monsanto for making "wrong,
unproven, misleading and confusing" claims  in the  huge UK press campaign it
ran last summer. The ASA said  that Monsanto had expressed its own opinion "as
accepted fact".The ads were "designed to elevate discussion of biotech and
refine the  science from some of the fiction surrounding it" according to Dan
Verackis, but the ASA has pretty much agreed that it was Monsanto peddling the
fiction.

Italian Government
join the Dutch challenge to
Patents on Life

The Italian Government joined the Netherlands in December 1998 to
challenge the validity of the Life Patents directive. The aim of this
directive has  been to move the EU into a position within the WTO to oppose
the
right of countries to choose whether they want to patent plants and animals or
not. This right is granted under the current global patent regimes (TRIPs)
within the WTO, which is up for review during 1999. Most developing counties
have not supported patenting. Among the arguments put forward in the challenge
against the directive is that it violates human dignity through allowing the
patenting of isolated body parts

First case of  Organic
contamination by GMO'S

Over 87,000 packets of Organic Tortilla chips were recalled and destroyed by
European  distributors in February after  analysis revealed that GM material
was present.
Manufacturer Terra Prima is based in Wisconsin but the maize used was grown on
a 7,000 acre organic farm in Texas, a region in which many farmers grow the
controversial GM Maize. Lindsey Keenan, from Genetic Food Alert (The UK
Natural
Food trade campaign) commented "We can not praise the responsible attitudes
and
prompt actions of these companies highly enough. Their actions are a credit
both to themselves and to the wider organic and natural foods industry. Whilst
companies such as Sainsburys and Marks and Spencer might be happy to sell you
produce containing GM ingredients our trade is clear that we consider this to
be unwanted, unacceptable and potentially dangerous contamination.”

Canada finally rejects
Genetically Engineered rBGH

On December 4th 1998 Canada  announced that it wont be giving
approval to Monsanto's rBGH - a GE "bovine growth hormone" for cattle also
known as Bst-to increase milk yield. The decision was based on a report from
Canada’s Veterinary Medical Association that concluded that there were
significant health risks to cattle from injecting the drug - including a 25%
increase in udder infections (including mastitis), 18% increase in infertility
and a 50% increase in lameness. This can lead to the increased use of
antibiotics, which could end up in milk. Mastitis also leads to a higher pus
content in milk. Scientific evidence has also suggested that BST could lead to
cancer in humans.
In Europe a 5 year moratorium on the use of rBGH for cattle is up for review
this year. However, imports from the US mean that it is likely that we are
already consuming milk based products from rBGH treated cows.

New Zealand University adds frog genes to salmon

In the first example of the genetic engineering of marine species in New
Zealand university researchers are splicing frog genes in to salmon. "Salmon
are migratory fish and I am deeply concerned that this tampering work will
eventually transfer gene pollution to the oceans" a green party spokesperson
commented. She points out that the country seems to becoming one of the worlds
major GE centres, citing the siding with the US at the Biosafety Protocol
talks
as evidence of this. "Unlike cautious European countries, we have become the
mutant-making hand-maiden to big US companies like Monsanto."
---------------------------
First Animal DNA decoded

Scientists have recently managed to decode the DNA of a whole animal for the
first time, successfully mapping out the 19,909 genes of a microscopic
roundworm. Estimates on when the entirety of human  DNA is decoded vary,
although a  $3 billion US federal Human Genome Project expects to map out the
80,000 genes (approx) in the human body by 2003. This will bring the
concept of
designer babies ever closer.
--------------------------
Genetic Engineering on Trial

During the next six weeks genetic engineering will be put on trial in 3 court
cases across the UK and Ireland as campaigners face charges for crop pulling.
Two women face "conspiracy to commit criminal damage" for pulling up GM Maize
at Hood Barton farm, near Totnes Devon. They will argue that their action was
justified to protect the neighbouring organic farm, other crops in the
vicinity
and the wider environment. A support campaign is up and running -call 01803
840098. Five women, and the press officer, from GenetiX snowball, face
Monsanto
in the civil courts. The Biotech company is seeking damages and injunctions
following the pulling up of a GM oilseed rape trial last summer- call 0161 834
0295. And in Ireland a number of individuals face Monsanto in the courts after
the destruction of a GM Sugarbeet trial during the last year.
A fourth case in Scotland has been heard, with 4 activists fined a total of
£1,800 for “malicious mischief” and aggravated trespass.
All have vowed to continue their campaigns against GMO’s.
