Dear All:
Shiv Chopra, better known as one of six whistle blowers at Health
Canada who alerted the public to the Canadian government's
attempt to
ignore safety concerns and facts about Monsanto's bovine growth
hormone and other drugs such as carbodox is back in the news
but this
time related to his struggle for his own rights in a marathon battle
against racism and discrimination within the Canadian public
service.
Chopra, born and raised a Hindu in the Punjab, came to Canada in
the
60's, received his PhD in Microbiology from McGill University in
Montreal and soon after began his career with Health Canada
where he
has worked for 32 years doing essentially the same job as when he
started - evaluating drugs for the department in spite of thwarted
attempts at promotion.
The Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruled this week that Health
Canada discriminated against Chopra because of his ethnicity. His
story, made public, and his vindication along with a recent highly
critical Government Task Force Report bode well for positive change
within the public service and Health Canada judging from those quoted
within.
Chopra, known for his integrity and truthfulness, remains
surprisingly upbeat about his career at Health Canada: ``I've had a
great experience. I've served my science. I've been honest. I've
served my fellow Canadians and, through Canada, I have served the
world.''
He concludes:
``It's been my religious upbringing. Don't provoke fights. Don't
indulge in fights, but when corruption rises to this extent then you
must be prepared to sacrifice anything, including your life.''
For more details of his case see the lengthy August 18th
Toronto Star article which can be found at:

all the best,
janet m eaton,
