I think I have discovered the answer to my own question.
According to Dr Pusztai's paper, the potatoes used in his work were not =
grown from tissue culture - they were second generation. .
As Dr Gatehouse was one of three leaders of the project, he must have =
known how the potatoes were grown. Its hard to see how an honest mistake =
could have been made in this matter.
Someone is lying

Very curious.

Expert discredits GM risks study
By Steve Connor, Science Editor
CLAIMS that genetically modified potatoes damaged the=20
health of rats have=20
been savaged by a scientist who took part in the=20
experiments.
John Gatehouse, a reader in biological sciences at Durham=20
University, said=20
the effects allegedly observed by Arpad Pusztai of the=20
Rowett Research=20
Institute almost certainly have nothing to do with genetic=20
modification. Dr=20
Pusztai's supporters said experiments in which he fed GM=20
potatoes to rats=20
showed the act of genetic modification, rather than toxins=20
used, caused=20
immune suppression and stunted growth.
Dr Gatehouse, one of three leaders of the government-funded=20
project, said=20
he had spoken out because of irresponsible press reports.
If any rats became ill it was probably because of a=20
build-up of natural toxins=20
in the potatoes as a result of the plants being grown from=20
tissue cultures.=20
"There might be a scientific explanation for what Dr=20
Pusztai has observed but=20
it is not necessarily to do with genetic modification."
An effect of culturing plants from tissue, which was how=20
the potatoes in the=20
experiment were grown, is that they regenerate with high=20
levels of natural=20
toxins, which can stunt the growth of laboratory animals.=20
Potatoes are=20
naturally rich in toxins but can be made more poisonous by=20
growing the plants=20
from tissue cultures. "It is an old effect and well known,"=20
Dr Gatehouse said.
