   India appeals over indigenous medicine

India's vice-president has called for indigenous medical remedies to
be protected from attempts by western drugs companies to commercialise
   them.

Krishan Kant said that multinational firms were trying to patent
   Indian medicinal substances.

And he attacked them for what he called their "predatory practices".

Mr Kant said the trend was apparent from recent instances of drugs
companies seeking to patent the active agents in turmeric and neem, by
taking advantage of international laws on intellectual property
   rights.

"We need to address this issue urgently by bringing our best
scientific minds to examine, analyse, experiment and formulate
remedies based on traditional cures and to properly document our
ancient knowledge in the modern idiom," said Mr Kant.
