BUDDHISTS CONDEMN GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOODS
A major international Buddhist organization has formally condemned genetic
engineering of food and advocated its required labeling. This is the text
of Dharma Realm Buddhist Association's resolution:
Genetic engineering of food is not in accord with the teachings of Buddhism.
Genetic engineering of food is unwarranted tampering with the natural
patterns of our world at the most basic and dangerous level.
Lack of labeling of genetically engineered food is a de facto violation of
religious freedom. Without labeling, Buddhists have no way to avoid
purchasing foods that violate their basic religious beliefs and principles;
and Buddhist vegetarians have no way to avoid purchasing foods that
contain genes from non-vegetarian sources.
All countries are urged to require labeling of all genetically engineered food.
The Dharma Realm Buddhist Association was founded by the Venerable Master
Hsuan Hua (1918-1995), the Ninth Patriarch of the Wei-Yang (Chinese Zen)
School of Buddhism; he was the spiritual teacher of hundreds of thousands of
disciples in Asia and the West. The association is headquartered in Talmage,
California (about 110 miles north of San Francisco) and has twenty-six
branch monasteries and temples throughout the world.
