CHINA EYES BIO-INDUSTRIES IN GREEN ECONOMY

Hand-held remote medical instrument, genetically modified mini pet pig and insect-resistant cotton using biotechnology etc., bio-industry and genetic science previously give us the senses of mystery and abstruseness. But a few days ago, at the Fifth Bioindustry Convention held in Shenzhen, a variety of new bio-tech products was introduced, which give us a feeling that the biotechnology is getting closer to our daily life.

At this convention, ?blood glucose collector? and ?remote blood pressure monitor? launched by Shenzhen New Element Medical Technology Development Co., Ltd. allow people to see doctors at home. After the blood glucose content is collected and measured, the value will be automatically transmitted to the cell phone via Bluetooth then to the central control center of the cooperative hospital in real time by GPRS. The application of Remote & Mobile Healthcare Monitoring Platform completely changes the traditional medical mode. Meanwhile, the pilot demonstration of multi-function health examination table has been carried out in some rural regions which can complete the physical examination of blood, urine, EKG and B ultrasound and the total charge is only RMB 20 to 40 yuan, far below the average examination charge of RMB 200 yuan.

The fast-growing biotechnology is changing our living concept. With the advanced technology in stem cell storage and application, the umbilical cord of the new-born which was previously discarded as medical waste has been used to extract mesenchymal stem cells, which can be stored for 22 years and even longer. These cells not only have medical significance on cerebral injury, senile dementia and leukemia treatment but also have cosmetic and anti-aging functions. At present, the stem cell industry has become an important part of bioindustry.

The mini pig bred by transgenic technology and manual clone technology weights 11 kg after three months of birth, which is only 30 percent of natural pigs of the same age. Shenzhen has few farmlands, but in terms of transgenic breeding, hybrid rice breeding, molecular design breeding and space mutation breeding, it ranks high in China. Bio-industry, as one of three strategic emerging industries in shenzhen, develops quickly both in terms of speed and scale, which promises to be the growth point of green economy and facilitate the transformation of economic development model.

The scale of bioindustry in Shenzhen continuously expands and the innovation ability is also continuously improved. Shenzhen has created the first Asian human genetic map, the first national new bioengineering drug of the first class and the first MRI diagnostic equipment for medial use, the first color ultrasonic Doppler blood imaging system and many other fruits of independent innovation, becoming the major force in promoting the development of Chinese bioindustry. The data shows that in 2010, the sales revenue of bioindustry in Shenzhen surpassed RMB 50 billion yuan, increased by 30 percent year on year. Its growth rate exceeded that of internet and new energy industries at the same period. More specifically, the biological service and the bio-environmental protection were increased by 78.6 percent and 52.8 percent respectively. The bio-industry is picking up its speed to be the leader of green economy.

The annual growth rate in the next decade is expected to be 20 percent.

In 2010, the State Council identified the bioindustry as one of the seven strategic emerging industries. Many regions of China positively deploy the bioindustry to facilitate its fast growing. The gross output value of bioindustry was increased to RMB 1.5 trillion yuan in 2010 from RMB1.3 trillion yuan in 2009.

Taking the medical instrument as an example, in 2010, the total export-import value of medical instrument in China reached USD 22.656 billion, increased by 23.47 percent year on year. In the import and export market of medical instrument, the share and ranking of China were both advanced, from 3.62 percent in 2006 to 5.74 percent in 2010 and from the seventh to the third respectively. At present, the production and import and export of medical instruments in China have involved 47 categories, 5000 types and over 30,000 specifications. China has gradually become the main production, import and export trading base in medical instruments in the world.

Promoting the development of bioindustry has also become an international trend. Taking genetically modified crops as an example, the authority data shows that in 2010, the planting area of genetically modified crops reached 148 million hectares in the world, 87 times as much as that in 1996, that is, in the past 15 years, its planting area has seen an annual average increase of about 5 times. In 1996, only six countries planted genetically modified crops in the world but in 2010, this number became 29. The planting area of top 4 genetically modified crops has hit a new high. Globally, 81 percent, 64 percent, 29 percent and 23 percent of the planting area of soybean, cotton, corn and rape plants is genetically modified crops respectively. At present, almost 40 countries and regions in the world haven?t legally approve the commercialized planting of genetically modified crops, but they allow the experimental study or importing genetically modified crops as raw materials in fee

?In the coming 5 or 10 years, the bioindustry will remain a development speed of 20 percent or so and in 2020, its annual output value will be RMB 8 to 10 trillion yuan, equal to the scale of current information industry.? Wang Changlin, Director of Industrial and Technical Economy Institute within the State Development and Reform Committee predicted at the Fifth Bioindustry Convention.
