RECORD PLANTING OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED SOY

As Quebec sets a new record for planting of genetically modified soybeans, farmers are keeping a worried eye on their fields. 148-thousand hectares of Quebec farmland are planted with Monsanto?s Round-Up Ready soy this year, up 16-percent over last year. The genetic make-up of the plant allows farmers to dose their fields with the herbicide Round-Up without damaging the beans. However, two Round-Up resistant weeds have cropped up in Ontario and there are worries they could spread. Quebec?s agriculture ministry says it is very concerned and is monitoring the situation.
