AUSTRIA AND CROATIA DISCUSS CREATION OF GMO-FREE ZONE

Representatives of the Croatian Parliament?s Environmental Protection Committee met with their Austrian counterparts in Vienna on Tuesday to discuss the establishment of a GMO-free zone in Alpe-Adria region. The President of the Croatian Committee Marijana Petir spoke about the creation of an area free of genetically modified organisms in order to protect the biological diversity of the region. The Austrian parliamentarians have expressed strong support for the Croatian initiative, which still awaits comments from colleagues in Slovenia, Hungary and Italy. Austrians have also promised to help Croatia in convincing its neighbours of the importance of such a zone. In addition to discussing the initiative, the two sides spoke about the treatment of communal, industrial and harmful waste, as well as the promotion of the use of renewable sources of energy, the daily Vecernji List writes.
