SPAIN, ENVIRONMENTALISTS AND FARMERS SAY NO TO GMOS

Thousands of farmers and environmentalists coming from every part of Spain marched in Zaragoza last Saturday under the theme ?For GMO-free food and farming.? Spain is the country that produces the highest volume of GMOs in Europe, and Aragon is the leading region in the Country. The demonstration has been led by several organizations of farmers and environmentalists from across Spain against genetically modified organisms (GMOs). While many Countries like Germany, France, Poland and Austria already prohibited these products, Spain remains the largest exporter of GM corn, with almost 80,000 hectares cultivated, and Aragon the leading region, with 30,000 hectares. The GM corn type grown in this region has been modified to be more resistant; nevertheless, according to environmentalists, it attacks biodiversity and has unknown effects on human health. Through this demonstration Spanish farmers aim at criticizing the interests of large corporations and complain also that this type
of corn contaminates other organic crops as well. Meanwhile, both the Secretary of State for Rural Water, Joseph Puxeu and the Minister of Agriculture of the Government of Aragon, Gonzalo Arguilé, last week in Saragossa claimed that this production is authorized by the European Union.

OPPONENTS OF GM CROPS PROTEST IN SPAIN

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of the Spanish city of Zaragoza calling for a ban on the use of genetically modified crops. They want their government to follow Germany?s lead in banning GM maize. Berlin?s action is against EU rulings that the biotech grain is safe. The use of GMOs in agriculture is a hugely controversial issue across the EU. Opponents say there are health concerns to be addressed while supporters say it is a perfectly safe and efficient way of meeting Europe?s food needs. Zaragoza is a major centre of GM research and production. Forty percent of 80,000 hectares devoted to GM maize in Spain are in the Zaragoza region.
