Spains OKs Monsanto biotech corn - USDA attache

WASHINGTON, July 20 (Reuters) - The Spanish government approved Monsanto
Co.'s NK603 variety of Roundup Ready corn for planting in Spain, a U.S.
Agriculture Department attache said on Wednesday.

"This is a major step forward for the Spanish government and for
biotechnology in Spain," a USDA attache in Madrid said in a report dated
July 15 and released on Wednesday.

Monsanto's NK603 corn is genetically modified to resist the herbicide
glysophate. It allows farmers to use Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller
without damaging the corn plant.

Attache reports are not official USDA data.

Spain's biotechnology commission approved the new variety at its meeting
last week, and will defend its decision before the European Food Safety
Agency, the attache said.

"The inter-ministerial commission reportedly agreed to continue case-by-
case decisions with respect to future Spanish votes on EC biotechnology
proposals," the report said. "Clearly, this is a move back to a science-
based decision-making process."

Earlier this month, China approved the use of the same Monsanto biotech
corn variety.

China OKs Monsanto GMO corn variety - US Ag Secc

BEIJING, July 11 (Reuters) - China's Ministry of Agriculture has approved
for import genetically modified corn developed by Monsanto, opening the
door for smooth imports of corn from the United States, U.S. Agriculture
Secretary Mike Johanns said on Monday.

"China has completed regulatory approval of a corn biotech variety, the
final of a series of approvals for U.S. biotech varieties," the US
Department of Agriculture said in a statement from Beijing.

The variety in question was NK603, Johanns told reporters.

China currently exports corn. It is expected to become a net importer as
the country's grain consumption rises along with higher incomes, while
land previously used for growing corn is turned to more profitable uses.

NK603 is a Roundup Ready maize type, developed by Monsanto to resist the
herbicide glysophate. It allows farmers to use the Roundup weedkiller --
also developed by Monsanto -- without damaging their corn crop.

China had already approved seven of the eight genetically modified corn
varieties common in the United States, an industry official told Reuters.

"But because they are co-mingled failure to approve any one would prevent
imports of corn," he told Reuters on Monday.

"A potential obstacle [to imports of U.S. corn] has been eliminated."

China is expected to consume 120 million tonnes of corn in 2005. It
exported three million tonnes in the first five months of the year, and
is expected to export at least three million tonnes more this year.

China had previously issued safety certificates for some of Monsanto's
genetically modified lines of soybeans, cotton, corn and canola.

EU food agency gives green light to GMO hybrids

BRUSSELS, July 15 (Reuters) - Europe's food safety agency gave a clean
bill of health on Friday to three more genetically modified (GMO) maize
types, its first assessment of hybrid strains that combine different
quality traits into one plant.

The three maize hybrids are all manufactured by U.S. biotech giant
Monsanto. Their intended use in the European Union, if an authorisation
is granted, would be for in food and animal feed, as well as industrial
processing, but not growing.

"The panel considered that the information available is sufficient to
come to a conclusion and that the GM maize hybrids ... will not have
adverse effects on human or animal health ior on the environment in the
context of their proposed uses," the European Food Safety Authority
(EFSA) said in a statement.

"These are not different from their conventional counterparts with regard
to their safety and nutritional properties," EFSA said.

The hybrids are based on the following modified maize types known by the
codenumbers MON 863, MON 810 and NK 603. No new genetic modification was
performed to create the hybrids.

Producing hybrid maize is a standard process in traditional maize
breeding. It involves producing separate lines that are then crossed to
make a hybrid seed, allowing for desirable traits to be selected to
enhance agricultural performance. NK 603 maize, for example, is
engineered to resist herbicides, while MON 863 can provide plant
protection against certain pests, specifically the corn rootworm. MON 810
maize is resistant to other pests such as caterpillars and certain worms.
