MEAT, SOY, BREAD ARE RUSSIA'S MOST WIDE-SPREAD TRANSGENIC FOODS

MOSCOW, January 13 (RIA Novosti) - "The most wide-spread genetically
modified sources are found in soy-containing foods - meat products (17.7
percent), baked and cereals foods (16.7 percent), soy products (16.4
percent)", the Russian Consumer Inspection says in a press release
received by RIA Novosti on Thursday.

This information comes from the inspection's probe, finding that about 12
percent of the inspected foods contained genetically modified products.

"GM foods are mostly imported," the communique says.

As of December 1, 2004, 13 GM raw foods and five GM microorganisms were
allowed for use in the food industry and sale over the counter.

According to the press release, one problem of GM foods is their
unscrupulous marking: the producer often fails to indicate the GM content.

In a bid to tighten control of GM foods, Russian state sanitary physician
Gennady Onishchenko has signed the resolution On Tightening Control of GM
Foods.

This resolution also speaks of introducing mandatory marking of such
foods "for the purpose of realizing the consumer rights to get full and
trustworthy information on the technology of food production."

He fixes the territorial boards of the Russian Consumer Inspection for
Moscow, St.Petersburg, the Rostov, Nizhny Novgorod, Sverdlovsk,
Novosibirsk regions and the Khabarovsk territory as the key centers for
detecting the GM content in foods.

In addition, Onishchenko has instructed the sanitary inspection of his
service to prepare proposals to the government on establishing an
interdepartmental genetic engineering activity commission.
