Riceland Foods stands against genetically modified rice in Missouri

LITTLE ROCK (AP) -- Stuttgart-based Riceland Foods Inc., wants federal
regulators to deny a request by a competitor for a permit to grow
genetically modified rice in southeastern Missouri.

Riceland, the world's largest rice miller and marketer, has asked the
U.S. Department of Agriculture to deny Ventria Bioscience's request to
grow about 200 acres of the rice in Cape Girardeau, Scott and Mississippi
counties in Missouri.

The Missouri Farm Bureau supports Ventria, which recently announced it
was moving from Sacramento, Calif., to Northwest Missouri State
University in Maryville to be the anchor tenant of a new center for
plant-made pharmaceuticals.

Riceland president and chief executive Danny Kennedy wrote the USDA's
Biotechnology Regulatory Service in a letter that genetically modified
rice isn't ready to be accepted in the rice market.

"Riceland will market more than half of the Missouri rice for our 848
Missouri farmer-members," Kennedy wrote. "About three-fourths of our
Missouri rice is exported. No country currently accepts genetically
modified rice, and most have a zero tolerance specification."
