Subject: Fundamental Human Right
"If certain farming practices are unsustainable -- irrigation with
groundwater that is not replenished, for example -- they should be taxed
rather than subsidized to make them less attractive to farmers. If
certain new pesticides are less toxic to people and the environment than
the traditional ones used by organic farmers, their use should not be
stigmatized by those seeking economic advantage for their own farming
practices. If certain GM crops make agriculture more sustainable because
they permit less pesticides to be used or conserve water they should
certainly not be banned but embraced by society."
I think that this extract from Mr. Maarten hits the button right on the
head [see http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20040616/
news_lz1e16chrispe.html] and covers one of the most basic of human rights
as well as being rational and sane. Could the Author amplify on these
aspects and could we take it up internationally? Oppose yes, enforce upon
others without demonstrated proof -- NO!

5. Request for comments on our declaration in support of open dialogue on
plant-made pharmaceuticals
The potential benefits of plant biotechnology for production of
pharmaceuticals merits an informed discussion regarding its development,
regulation and application. We have created a declaration in support of
open dialogue and offered visitors with the opportunity to sign their
name to the declaration. In addition, we would also like you to consider
submitting your individual comments on the need for an open and informed
discussion of PMPs for publications on the plantpharma.org Web site.
Please use this as an opportunity to let the public know your thoughts on
the topic.
To submit individual comments, please send to info@plantpharma.org or use
our online form at: http://www.plantpharma.org/ials/submitarticle.php
"I would request all those who oppose scientific research for the
advancement and betterment of human life to pause and consider the plight
of their less fortunate brothers and sisters around the world and their
desperate need for support and succor. Let science find a way for healing
humanity! All those who oppose scientific enquiry are actually opposing
humanity and denying others the gifts that they may be enjoying. Have you
seen malnourishment or disease that could be avoided and is not? If you
are not the cause for this sorry state of affairs, please either be their
cure or leave them alone!"

Informed Discussion on Plant-Made Pharmaceuticals
http://www.plantpharma.org/ials/index.php?id=132
5. Where is the best place in the world to cultivate plant-made
pharmaceuticals?
Determining the best locations for plant-made pharmaceutical production
involves numerous regional considerations: appropriate climate, soil, and
other conditions for year-round production; access to laboratory-trained
personnel; regulatory infrastructure; and appropriate isolation from
similar crops, to name just a few. This week, PlantPharma.org member
Sardar Taimur Hyat-Khan, Chairman of the Khidmat Foundation, makes his
case for why Pakistan should be considered as a location for production
of plant-made pharmaceuticals. Highlights of his remarks follow:
"Pakistan is a country with great diversity in climate and relief, we
have everything from coastal sub-tropical; through desert, semi-arid to
arid zones; to wet mountains and sub alpine, all relatively close
proximity. Our people are struggling with poverty and disease, they need
all the help they can get. Labor is inexpensive and land is extensive,
cost of production for locals with due guidance is negligible. Contrary
to news reports, we are quite peaceful, with trouble-spots few and far
between. Security is ample and government guarantees for investors are
well defined and biased heavily towards the investor. We are a practical,
hands-on operation. Our major gripe is that most people seem to consider
sustainable development merely a subject to talk about. Eighteen-years of
experience in the rural areas, growing with hi-tech, 21st century inputs
(Stoller Chemicals USA through Stoller (Pakistan) Pvt. Ltd.). Our mission
is 'For The Cause That Lacks Assistance, For The Wrong That Needs
Resistance, And For The Good That We can Do!' We can arrange land for pak
healing & growing fields and provide the requisite administrative support
for any growing venture. We would try to be the best of hosts and would
provide unstinting support for a noble cause."
