CROATIAN GOVERNMENT IN FAVOR OF GM FOOD BEING SOLD IN COUNTRY

ZAGREB -- The sale of genetically modified food on the Croatian market
will be possible but this food will first have to undergo a rigorous
analysis by competent bodies and be specifically marked, according to the
final draft of a food law the government endorsed on Wednessday [4 June].
Croatia will get a laboratory for the detection of genetically modified
organisms (GMOs) by the end of the month, said Assistant Agriculture
Minister Miroslav Bozic. The food bill stipulates that all food and food
ingredients containing GMOs must carry a clearly visible sticker reading
"this product derives from GMOs". Within six months Croatia will also get
a food agency which will examine the healthiness and hygiene of food,
analyse risk and manage risk in crises. The establishment of the agency
is a commitment Croatia has towards the European Union. The food bill
also calls for the definition of food unsuitable for the market. This is
food past its expiry date, with ingredients which do not correspond to
the sticker, and food containing more or less of allowed ingredients, for
example iodine in table salt. Under the bill, inspectors will be allowed
to enter and search premises suspected of illegally manufacturing food,
which is not the case now. Work on the bill, which has been forwarded
into urgent parliamentary procedure, took two years.
