FG Commits N3.2bn to Food Production Annually

President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that the federal government has
committed $26 million (N3.2 billion) per annum to developing
biotechnology to promote food production. President Obasanjo was quoted
to have made this declaration in the recent edition of an American
publication, Food from Genetically Improved Crops in Africa. He noted
that "the 21st century will be biological and diverse with biotechnology
being the kingpin of the process," adding that biotechnology has been
used to create many improved crops. He cited insect resistant crops,
reducing the need for pesticides or delayed ripening in tomatoes, and
virus resistance in potatoes among others. He said through biotechnology,
industrialists and scientists are expected to replace an existing copy of
a gene with another copy that may be slightly better, noting that new
molecular and genetic techniques will make genetic modification or
improvement of crops even more special industrial processing more
precise. He added that through rational approaches to traditional plant
breeding, "we will be able to improve African crops, such as cowpeas,
sorghum, cassava, and millet, that have not received much attention so
for," he said.
