South Korea AFMC says passes on non-GM soybean tenders

SEOUL - South Korea's state-run Agricultural and Fishery Marketing
Corp (AFMC) said on Monday it has passed on its March 31 tender to
buy 25,000 tonnes of non-genetically-modified (non-GM) edible
soybeans. An official with AFMC said only one firm had offered for
the tender and AFMC could not disclose the offered prices for the
passed tenders. AFMC plans to reinvite a tender late this week to buy
25,000 tonnes of non-GM edible soybeans in mid April, the official
said. It is also considering inviting another separate tender late
this week to buy 25,000 tonnes of edible soybeans in mid April, which
is its usual monthly purchase, he said. South Korea said last
November it would label GM corn, soybean and bean sprouts beginning
in March 2001, while it plans to label GM processed foods from July
2001.
