8: Discussion on Patents in Germany

genet-news mailing list

The German government has today announced that it will not implement the EU Life
Patents Directive as it stands! The government wants to limit the scope of the
patent protection on human genes, allowing patents only on the genes in
connection with a concrete application; the patent protection would not extend
to the gene for other applications.
A new draft law will now be formulated and will not be put forward for
discussion in the national parliament before the middle of next year.

This announcement made headline news in Germany today.
