MONSANTO FIGHT COURT RULING

BRAZILIAN PRO BIOTECH LOBBYISTS DENY EUROPEAN CONSUMER RESISTANCE
TO GM FOODS !

1. 30 June 1999. The National Council of Environment (CONAMA
Conselho Nacional do Meio Ambiente), approved the decision of
Judge Antonio Souza Prudente of the 6th Circuit Court of the
Federal Justice system requiring Environmental Impact Assessments
before the introduction of GM crops in Brazil. The decision is
very important as it reinforces the court ruling.

2. Monsanto and the Federal Government are challenging the Court
decision. There is a huge amount of aggressive GM lobbying taking
place in Brazil. One of Monsanto's main arguments to convince
farmers and technicians is that Europeans are against GM food
because their Biotech Industry needs more time to become
competitive as US Industry, such as Monsanto. They deny that
consumer pressure has played an important role in the
supermarkets decision to ban GM and look for alternative sources,
and other arguments put forward by the English Nature and the
BMA.

At a farmers rally last week attended by 8,000 farmers to discuss
Agribusiness in the Next Millenium, a Scientist from the Federal
Unversity of Rio Grande do Sul, Mr Homero Dewes was reported in a
Brazilian newspaper as saying: "European agriculture is backward
and indulges in a fantasy that does not want GM food. In fact,
Europeans need time to achieve the technology that Americans
already control".
