Press release Brussels, 25/8/99

The European Farmers Coordination (CPE) asks to support the 5 French farmers
prosecuted after a symbolic and pacific action in Millau of protest against
globalisation of trade.

Following a pacific demonstration of 300 farmers on August 12 organised by
the Confédération Paysanne (French member of CPE) and the ewe milk
producers' association against the construction of a Mac Donald restaurant ,
one of the symbols of the globalisation of the economy, 5 farmers were put
in jail. After a first demonstration of 1000 people in Millau on 18 August,
4 farmers were let out on a very high bail (64.000 Euro). José Bové remains
in jail in Montpellier.

CPE supports this action, which takes place in the battle against the
globalisation of agricultural trade, for example the battle between EU and
USA regarding the trade of hormoned beef. Because of US retaliation measures
against the import of Roquefort cheese, produced around Millau, Mac Donald
was chosen as symbolic target.

Regarding the facts (partial dismounting of the building and deposit of the
material at the Prefecture), the very large police operation was beyond
measure. CPE denounces this repression against farmers and
farmers'organisations.

The very hart reaction of the French police and justice is a sign that the
interests of a big transnational company are more important for the French
Government than the rights to clarify the public opinion about the stakes of
the next WTO negotiations.

Is it forbidden to explain the violence of the globalisation of agricultural
trade, directed by these companies, against the populations and their rights
in the South and in the North ?

CPE asks to release José Bové and to stop the prosecution of the five farmers.

A solidarity demonstration will be organised on August 31 in Montpellier.
