CAMPAIGN ORGANIC PARTICIPANTS: FYI -- FOLLOWING IS AN ACTION ALERT FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE RESIDENTS.

*** NEW HAMPSHIRE ACTION ON TERMINATOR TECHNOLOGY ***

New Hampshire is the first state with proposed legislation regarding the Terminator Technology -- this is just the beginning! Unfortunately, the biotech industry does not want even a study done of its technology, and will be active to fight this bill. Please act on this, and pass it along to others. Call me if you need more information.

Thank you

URGENT ACTION NEEDED!

NEW HAMPSHIRE BILL on "TERMINATOR TECHNOLOGY" NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT!

** MAY 13 SENATE HEARING IN CONCORD, NH **

H.B. 291 would establish a study committee to examine the threat of genetic seed sterilization technology on New Hampshire's agriculture and biodiversity.

What is "Terminator Technology?":
It is a new genetic technology that renders farm-saved seed sterile. In March 1998, a Mississippi-based seed company, Delta and Pine Land (recently acquired by Monsanto Corp.), and the US Department of Agriculture received a patent on a new seed sterilizing technology that genetically engineers plants to kill their own seeds. This will prevent farmers from saving seed from their harvest -- forcing farmers to return to the commercial market every year.

Scientists warn that, under certain conditions, the trait for seed sterility will flow, via pollen, from Terminator crops to surrounding plants, making the seeds of neighboring plants sterile. Simply put, the Terminator technology threatens to restrict the food producing capacity of farmers and destroy diversity.

What Can You Do? -- Write -- Phone -- Spread the Word

This bill has passed the New Hampshire House, and is now before the Senate. Both Monsanto and Delta and Pine Land have targeted this bill, and are pressuring New Hampshire legislators to defeat it. They will be pulling out all the stops, and coming to a Senate Hearing on the bill on May 13.

1. Write letters and make phone calls to your New Hampshire
Senators (see Sample letter and contact info on back).

2.	Spread the Word. Get others to write letters and make phone
   calls.

3.	Attend the upcoming Senate hearing on May 13. The hearing will
take place in Rm. 104 of the Legislative Office Building. For
more information contact the bill's sponsor, Rep. Marie
Rabideau at 603-382-3815 after May 7.

4.	Learn more about the Terminator Technology. This is an
important local, national and global issue. For more detailed
information on Terminator, see the RAFI website: www.rafi.org,
or contact the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Working
Group, (413) 323-4531, or the National Campaign for
   Sustainable Agriculture, above.
